Simplicity = 👑 Design Principle
the only one that counts
Simplicity is the greatest design principle.
In all parts of life - optimizing for simplicity is right decision. The greatest moments are simple, the greatest meals are made with simple recipes, the greatest music feels simple, the greatest art is so simple you think could have done it, the best jokes are almost so simple that you think you’ve thought them before.Â
All good things are simple. Simple is the core essence, stripped down of all the bullshit. Just the necessary and meaningful components with nothing extra.Â
Simple things are the result of constraints, and all good things come from constraints.Â
Its hard to produce a great work of art when you have a blank canvas, unlimited colors, and unlimited time (i.e., no constraints). Its easier to produce a great piece of art work when you have a limited amount of time, only certain colors, and it needs to resemble something specific (i.e., many constraints).Â
An unconstrained life isn’t the goal - its entirely undesirable. No constraints = needless suffering and near-endless procrastination. A good life is the result of actions, and actions are the result of constraints.Â
Simplicity is the goal, and simplicity is always present - often just hidden beneath a layer of unnecessary complexity or abstractions.
When it comes to designing systems or processes, simplicity is a necessity. Strive for simplicity, and everything else falls into place.
Simplicity is the only design principle that counts.Â
